Hordon train station opened on 29 June 2020, following a £10.55 million investment. This improved connectivity for communities in the area and supported the wider regeneration efforts. The reopening of Horden station was a significant event, as it represents a reversal of rail closures that occurred in the 1960s.
Politicians have been campaigning for years to pressure successive governments into also reopening the Leamside Line, which runs from Pelaw in Gateshead to Tursdale in County Durham, so the North East mayor Kim McGuinness recently caused excitment (April 2025) by publishing a map in the recent Local Growth Plan for the region, showing the potential stations which are only “illustrative” at this stage, but includes potential stations throughout county Durham including Ferryhill.
Bringing the disused route back into service, having been closed in the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, is seen as the single most important infrastructure upgrade for the economic future of the North East.
A spokesperson for the North East Combined Authority, added: “The Leamside Line is the most important transport infrastructure project for the future prosperity of North East England. We are working hard behind the scenes to make this project a reality"
