The "Northern economic campus" refers to a new, purpose-built campus for the HM Treasury in Darlington. This location is in addition to the main offices in London, and other offices in Edinburgh and Norwich. The Darlington campus is intended to be a hub for government departments and agencies, including those focused on economic growth and development. Strategically placed to allow for closer collaboration with businesses and institutions in the North.
Since 2021, the campus hit a significant milestone in the Autumn of 2024 of 1000 recruits, of which more than 80% were recruited locally.
In December 2024 Darlington Economic Campus hosted the Growth Mission Board which was the first time the North East had hosted this event. They covered the government’s Plan for Change to drive economic growth and improve living standards for working people, and discussed progress on delivering the government’s commitment to build 1.5 million houses, and how to make the most of the opportunities for growth in our city regions and plans to further support devolution in England.
Mayors from across the country then joined the Chancellor for a Mayoral Roundtable, where she set out how regional growth would be hardwired into the government’s work. These events showed that the new campuss is the place to make policy and do business together.
